After some time the business expanded their range of services into a chain of restaurants & luxury hotels. Marriott International was founded dating back to 1992 as the Marriott Corporation split into two different businesses, Marriott International and Host Marriott Corporation. In 2002 Marriott Hotels International initiated a major restructuring by spinning off many Senior Living Services Communities (which is now part of Sunrise Senior Living) and Marriott Distribution Services, such that the firm could pool on hotel management, leadership and ownership. The changes were completed in 2003. In April 1995, Marriott International acquired a 49% interest in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company LLC. Marriott International was strongly convinced that it could increase sales and profit at the Ritz, a troubled but very popular chain with a number of hotels and resorts either being unprofitable or barely breaking even. The sum of Marriot’s initial investment was budgeted to be about $200 million in cash and oustanding payments in form of debt. The next year, Marriott Hotels spent $331 million to take over the Ritz-Carlton Atlanta and aquire a majority share in two luxury hotels owned by William Johnson, a real estate developer who had purchased the Ritz-Carlton Boston in 1983 and expanded his Ritz holdings over the next couple of decades. The Ritz began expansion into the very profitable timeshare market among other new business expansion plans made financially possible , which also lent its own in-house expertise in certain areas. There were other benefits for The Ritz-Carlton taking advantage from its business relationship with Marriott, the Ritz used its parent company’s reservation system and buying power. The partnership was solidified in 1998 as Marriott International announced its interest in The Ritz-Carlton to 99 percent. By the year 1999 revenues from the 35 5 star luxury hotels it directed across the planet totaled just over $1.4 billion. Marriott International owned Ramada International Hotels & Resorts up to the 15th September in 2004 when the luxury chain was sold to Cendant. At all of the North American hotels the Marriott International is the first luxury hotels chain to serve food that is absolutely free of trans fats.
In 2005, Marriott Vacation Club International and Marriott International comprised two of the 53 hotels that contributed the maximum of $250,000 to the second inauguration of President George W. Bush. Marriott initiated on the 19th July, 2006 that all luxury hotel and resort establishments operating in the US and Canada would become non-smoking beginning September 2006. “The new policy includes all guest rooms, restaurants, lounges, meeting rooms, public space and employee work areas.”
