St. Regis Grand Hotel - Luxury Hotel near Via Veneto

St. Regis Grand Hotel, Rome, Italy Luxury Hotel

There is certainly a great variety of hotels in Rome, from deluxe to mid-range and a large number of well priced hotels especially around the Termini Central Train Station. However hotels in Rome are something like heaven at the top end but can be more like purgatorio on the lower end. High standards in service, comfort and facilities can be taken for granted in the very top class category but when seeking for accommodation anywhere below that, and let’s be honest that is where most of us would try and find a hotel room, standards can vary considerably from hotel to hotel even within the same category.

I worked for two years in the Roman hotel industry and can certainly say that budget hotels do not always meet their standards of service, comfort, facilities, quiet location – things that would be taken for granted paying that price in US or UK cities. When you are seeking for hotel accommodation in the lower price range you should take your time planning your vacation to Rome or elsewhere in Italy. Ask yourself to what extend it is still possible to find a reasonably priced hotel in Rome without fall into any of the notorious tourist traps where the quality does match the price. In most instances you will realize that in order to rely on high quality accommodation it is always a good thing to book your holiday in one of the well-known top luxury hotel chains in Rome.

Cheap Rooms vs. Luxury Rooms

Rooms can be too dark with not enough daylight or very cheap but surprisingly without a private shower and so on. When you arrive at the railway station Termini avoid those “scam artists” that hang around in dozens and try to convince innocent tourists that they have the perfect, cheap hotel room for them. Be aware that these people often charge the hotel a 20 to 25% commission on top of the hotel price, so that can’t be cheaper right! Instead take my advise and sort out your accommodation before you arrive in Rome. Luxury has its price but does not necessarily has to be over your travel budget. If you look closly than even some of the really famous luxury hotel chains like Ritz and Hilton do offer discounts. Many mid-budget travellers live in the illusion they would never have enough to stay in one of those prior luxury hotels. But in many cases that is wrong thinking! The best thing to do is look up on some of the online travel agencies that offer a variety of vacation package where you can book cheap flights, hotel, car rental and even museum tickets all-in-one and mostly for discounted rates. Or when you want to have a price comparison of all online travel agencies and airlines at the same time use travel consolidators to search for that. Definitely arrange accommodation before your arrival!

Hotels in Rome - five star luxury hotel in Rome

Four Seasons Gresham Palace Rome Luxury Hotel

The good thing about Rome is that there are plenty of mid-range hotels usually clustered around the Termini railway station. When you are planning your trip to Rome and choose your hotel the most important thing is to prioritise. Is it the picturesque view you wanting, luxury or to save some money with the budget to mid-range hotels around Termini station? For the picturesque view you have to stay in one of the smaller hotels in the historic centre, perhaps pay 10% more for the view and a nice roof terrace for your morning breakfast. For a pure luxury hotel with Jakusi and swimming pool have a look at Via Veneto and for the lower end budget hotels the Termini train station.

Hotel Location

It does make quite a bit of difference whether you stay around Termini station or directly in the historic center. From Termini it’s a bit far to walk every day so you might need to use public transport when you go out to see some of Rome’s tourist attractions, monuments and museums. Whereas staying somewhere between the Spanish Steps and Campo de Fiori will give you the great advantage to go to your hotel for a short break, eat, rest a bit and then do the other half of the center. There are hotels such as the King Hotel and luxury hotels as the Hotel Eden, Aleph A Boscolo and the St. Regis I will introduce later on, where you get a bit of all, mid-range affordable rooms, with roof terrace, in a quiet location, but just next to one of the major sights in central Rome.
